I sit at a table with You
Invited by the One most worthy
A table set by You
Not a single spoon could I contribute
Nothing could I bring to the table
Yet I’m sitting at a table with You
Contributing myself
The contrast jarring
You, the God who needs no one
You, the Father, the Son, the Spirit
You, a community in Yourself
Still, I sit at a table with You
In my unworthiness
Except, I am only unworthy on my own
In You, I am entirely worthy
Because You are endlessly worthy
Communion at a table
Set by You
Built by Your carpenter hands
Pierced on a mercifully perverted use of wood
Yet you took that wood
Sawed it, planed it, sanded it
Aligned the slivers, glued them tight
Made it good
You made a table for communion
Now I get to sit at the table
And stare into Your eyes
Endlessly deep, incessantly loving
Forever tender
Invited by the One most worthy
A table set by You
Not a single spoon could I contribute
Nothing could I bring to the table
Yet I’m sitting at a table with You
Contributing myself
The contrast jarring
You, the God who needs no one
